What to see in Hlíðarendi

Hlíðarendi (Hlídhaendi) is an urban nucleus located in Fljótshlíð, in Rangarvallasýsla, Iceland. For centuries it was headquarters and residence of the sýslumaður (sheriff) of the district. Until 1802 he had his own parish until he was transferred to Teigi and the municipality did not have a church until 1896, built in honor of Bishop Torlak of Iceland that was born in Hlíðarendi around 1133.

Hlíðarendi is mostly famous because it was the hacienda of one of the main characters of the Njál saga, Gunnar Hamundarson and its family clan. Other illustrious residents were Gísli Magnúusson (Visi-Gísli) in the seventeenth century And the poet Bjarni Thorarenen.
